YES. All pedigree
Portlands are registered through the Rare Breed
Survival Trust (although this is now being contracted
out). Any that are not registered or do not have the
papers enabling them to be registered for whatever
reason, only have meat value. Their
offspring cannot be registered. The
Trust will not register sheep which do not have the
correct papers. If
potential vendors say the sheep can be registered but
they do not have the papers, get
them to register the animals before
the sale is completed. ....
.There
is no appeal: .no
paperwork - no registration!
To register an animal, the owner
simply fills in a form, sends it of with a fee and a
registration number is issued. By sending in the
registration form the owner is certifying that the
animal meets the breed standard but at present there
are no independent checks. Registration is
not a guarantee of quality, you have to make up your
own mind about that.
Of course, if you only want some
attractive sheep to graze your land, the above does
not apply. But you never know, you might want to
register some lambs one day or enter a show and those
avenues would be closed to you if you buy
unregistered stock.
