Portland Lambs

It is quite possible to use ram lambs in their first year. Lambs are usually cheaper but of course you often don't know exactly how the animal will turn out. We would never put ewe lambs into lamb. they are just not mature enough in their first year. We have Portland lambsseen ewe lambs that have been lambed and even if they lamb successfully they never really seem to recover and often appear slightly stunted.

You can use a ram lamb on ewes, they are more than capable at 7 or 8 months old! However it may be best to limit the number of ewes. The drawback is that if the ram lamb has potential problems such as tight horns it might not be evident at a very young age but would of course be passed on to his offspring.

OUT OF SEASON LAMBING

It would seem that Portlands can lamb at any time of the year, a characteristic shared with Polled Dorsets. Theoretically you could get three lamb crops in two years but this is pushing the sheep to the limit of their capabilities and we would definitely not recommend it. One aspect of the ewes' tendency to come into season at almost any time is that you have to wean any entire ram lambs fairly early or you may get some unwanted pregnancies!
