Portlands are a rare breed of sheep originally from the South Dorset area in South West England. If you own Portlands, are interested in Portlands or just wonder what on earth a Portland sheep is. Then this site is for you. If you are interested in Conservation from a practical point of view take look at the Conservation, Winter and Summer pages.

We have kept Portland sheep since the early 1980s when they were almost on the edge of extinction In 1997 we bought an ancient smallholding called Beer Mill Farm in a small hamlet called Beercrocombe near Taunton in Somerset which dates back to the early 1600s.

These pages also contain a diary of life at Beer Mill Farm. There is a comprehensive history of Portland sheep and a section devoted to the history of sheep keeping in general with many fascinating references to times past when shepherding was a much admired profession. As of course it should be today

Hilary and Brian Howell welcome you to their Portland sheep web site. We enjoy keeping Portlands but this is not a 'everything is perfect about this breed' site. We have tried to point out some of the many things we have learnt in nearly 25 years of keeping these fascinating sheep. We hope you find it useful and if you want more information don't hesitate to get in touch.

In 2004 we both took early retirement and decided reluctantly to leave Beer Mill Farm and move to a slightly smaller property to give us more time to pursue our other interests and travel more.  We have decided to leave the site running
