Useful Books

To the best of our knowledge there are no books purely on Portland sheep. There is a comprehensive list of books containing references to the breed in the Breed History on this web site more.

Three books we would not be without are listed below:

'The Vetinary Book for Sheep Keepers'. David C. Hendersen published by Farming press ISBN No. 0 85236 189 0. Short of calling the vet, this book is your best bet. At least in our opinion!

'Blacks Vetinary Dictionary'. Editor Geoffery West published by Adam & Charles Black ISBN no. 0 1736226 1. Ours is an old edtition so the ISBN No. might have changed. This is a very comprehensive book and the standard vetinary reference book BUT it is a bit like reading a human medical dictionary and you can frighten yourself into thinking the worst!

'An Introduction to Keeping Sheep' by Jane Upton & Dennis Soden. Published by Farming Books and Videos (01772 652693) ISBN No. 0 85236332 X. This is the best book we have ever come across setting out the basics of sheep keeping. Highly recommended.
